These notes offer an alternative approach to how the novel is studied in the classroom. It is based on work done by a New York teacher who said: “Perhaps ironically, I’ve found that the key to helping students take a work apart for close analysis is letting them read the whole thing first.”
The notes outline the approach and then give step-by-step instructions on how to implement the approach. The key to success using this approach is to create a “supportive classroom environment”, giving learners both the “time and space to interact with the literary work.” Relevant to all grades.
